New Study Reveals Effects of Hyaluronic Acid Injectable Fillers
Many cosmetic surgeons and medical spas offer hyaluronic acid gel-based fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm for filling out wrinkles and lines, and use them for the “liquid facelift” procedure. A new development announced at the American Society of Plastic Surgery annual conference, Plastic Surgery 11 THE Meeting in September 2011 is a solid – not gel – hyaluronic acid filler that is instantly reversible. This filler may offer a more precise correction of wrinkles and lines than gel-based fillers, and is an exciting development in the field of minimally-invasive plastic and cosmetic surgery.
According to Geoffrey Gurtner, MD, ASPS Member Surgeon and lead author of the study, “This novel technology has significant advantages over injecting fillers in gel form. It can be placed in the exact depth and position desired without spreading and boasts a greater predictability than other treatments."
Hyaluronic acid gel fillers can be effective for getting rid of lines and wrinkles around the mouth and nose, but are not usually effective for eliminating crow’s feet or wrinkles along the forehead. A solid hyaluronic acid filler can be administered with a very fine wrinkle and placed directly under the wrinkle to plump up the skin. Within a few hours, this solid thread hydrates, swells and turns into a soft compound that is very similar to a gel filler. This makes it easy for the surgeon or medical spa specialist to place the compound in exactly the right place and plump up very small wrinkles and folds. Solid hyaluronic acid is faster to administer than gel fillers, and may produce even better results.
Soft tissue fillers continue to be one of the most popular non-invasive treatment options for those who want to get rid of lines, wrinkles and sagging skin. These fillers offer instant results and have few side effects. Hyaluronic acid plumps up the skin to create very smooth and natural-looking contours, and is often used as part of a liquid facelift treatment.
